Ramboldia sorediata Kalb

T: Yilliminning Rock, c. 12 km E of Narrogin, W.A., 32°50’S, 117°23’E, alt. 350 m, on decorticated twigs of shrubs, 16 Aug. 1994, K. & A.Kalb s.n.; holo: CANB; iso: Herb. Kalb.

  Thallus pale yellow to pale tan, areolate, to 15 mm wide; areolae confluent, 0.2–0.5 mm wide, to 0.1 mm thick; isidia absent. Soralia to 0.3 mm wide, originating at the margins of the areolae, soon spreading over the surface, or the thallus composed of contiguous coarse ecorticate granules c. 0.1–0.25 mm wide which dissolve into soredia; soredia farinose, grey with a ±bluish tinge. Photobiont cells 9–14 µm wide. Apothecia very rare, sessile, round, 0.3–0.4 mm diam.; disc jet-black, glossy, initially plane, becoming convex; margin thin, black and glossy, persistent or becoming excluded in old apothecia. Exciple similarly coloured. Epihymenium 7–9 µm thick, chocolate-brown, K+ olive-grey. Hymenium 40–45 µm thick, colourless to pale yellow-brown, K–. Hypothecium 50–60 µm thick, colourless to pale brown, K–; subhypothecium colourless, K+ intense yellow. Paraphyses conglutinated, sparingly branched and anastomosing, 2–3 µm thick, regularly tapered, inspersed with minute brownish granules that dissolve in K; apices colourless, not swollen. Asci 28–35 × 10–13 µm. Ascospores narrowly ellipsoidal, 6–8 × 2.5–3.5 µm. Pycnidia not seen.
CHEMISTRY: Thallus and subhypothecium, K+ intense yellow; containing thamnolic acid.
  This endemic species is known from W.A. and Tas.; grows on decorticated wood or on branches in open, sclerophyll forest.
