Eucryphia lucida 'Pink Cloud'

ORIGIN: Eucryphia 'Pink Cloud' was selected from a wild population of Eucryphia lucida near Smithton in North-West Tasmania in 1984. The collection was made in a forestry working area. The cultivar was first received by the Authority in September 1985. Registration applied for by K and L Gillanders, Woodbank Nursery, RMB 303, Kingston 7150.

DESCRIPTION: The plant from which the material was selected was about 16m tall. However, as with other forms of Eucryphia lucida when grown in cultivation, it will most likely only attain a height of 5 to 7m. The flowers, which occur in the summer months are a soft pink deepening to rose in the centre of the flower. They are 4cm in diameter.

DIAGNOSIS: The flower colour is the distinguishing feature of this cultivar being pink instead of white as is usual with E. lucida.

CULTIVATION NOTES: Extra moisture will be required in drier parts of Australia during the summer months. The cultivar is frost hardy. Vegetative propagation is required to preserve the cultivar form. A short description was published in the "Garden Journal" of autumn 1986 p 170.
