ANBG Botany Section

Access:

The Botany Section is located entirely on the ANBG site. There are three units. The LIBRARY is on the top floor of the Botany Building to the north-west of the Visitor Information Centre. The HERBARIUM and its staff are located on both floors of the Botany Building and in the herbarium building proper, which is immediately to the west of the Botany Building. The RESEARCH UNIT is located in a series of demountable buildings just north of the Rainforest Gully, about 100 m NW of the Kiosk.

All units are staffed throughout normal office hours; i.e. between 8.30 am and 5 pm. Botany Section work areas are not open to public access except by arrangement with the unit leaders.

Functions/Sevices:

The Botany Section is responsible for:

managing a comprehensive national collection of preserved plant material (including permanent voucher specimens for the Gardens' living collections)
developing and maintaining integrated database systems for the names and distributions of Australian plants, and for the living and preserved collections of the ANBG
conducting research programs (principally systematic) into the Australian flora
developing a library collection relevant to the goals of the ANBG and the Agency
answering public and professional inquiries for plant identifications and information on the Australian flora
providing technical, policy, and interpretative advice to other sections of ANPWS

In 1993 the Herbarium and Research Units will combine with the CSIRO Plant Industry Herbarium to form a jointly managed facility to be known as the Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research and Australian National Herbarium. From late 1993 or early 1994, some of the collections of the ANBG herbarium, and many of its staff, together with the Research unit, will be located on the CSIRO site. All ANCA sections will be circulated with details of the new arrangements at that time.

Live Plant Material

Live plant material sent through the post should be clearly marked as such. Material for ordinary plant identifications should include a pressed, dried specimen bearing leaves, floers, and fruit if possible, firmly packed, with notes on habitat and place of origin. A briefing sheet exists on the servcies available to other sections of ANCA and the public; if your section does not have one, please enquire.
