PRESS RELEASE

NATIONAL PLANT CONSERVATION RESOURCE

First National Conference of the Australian Network for Plant Conservation

The Australian Endangered Flora Collection, a new resource for plant conservation, research and education is to be launched at the coming first conference of the Australian Network for Plant Conservation in Hobart. The Collection is a co-operative project by ANPC members throughout Australia and will, by making plants available for distribution, reduce the need for repeated collecting from the wild.

The ANPC was established in 1991 in response to the need for better communication among the many organisations and individuals interested or active in plant conservation in Australia. It has sought to unite the efforts to conserve plants in the wild and in cultivation.

The conference entitled "Cultivating Conservation" is to be opened by Mr John Cleary, the Tasmanian Minister for Environment and Land Management and will be held at the University of Tasmania from 6-9 December 1993.

The keynote address on the conservation of Tasmanian native plants is to be presented by Prof. Jamie Kirkpatrick. Other speakers come from a wide range of interested groups including the forestry and mining industries and community groups. Topics to be discussed will include the re-introduction of species into the wild and the commercialisation of endangered species.

The Conference is being hosted by the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens as a part of their 175th anniversary and as a member of the ANPC. The Australian Nature Conservation Agency and the Australian International Development Assistance Bureau have contributed funding towards this conference.
