Evaluation: Ulladulla and Coffs Harbour rehabilitation workshops

·       Ulladulla: 25-26 October 2006

·       Coffs Harbour: 14-15 March 2007

Quotes – Ulladulla and Coffs Harbour

The following are unedited quotes from the evaluation forms (‘other comments or suggestions’ section).

Ulladulla

Well worth attending, all professionals informing useful ideas with lots to think about and put into practice (Local Government representative, Ulladulla participant).

Congratulations on two excellently run and informative days. There was a great amount of knowledge to absorb and I hope the notes will help in retaining it. The sessions have provided me with a deeper understanding of environmental principles and I am sure I will be looking at our Bushcare site with different ‘eyes’! Thank you. (Bushcare group representative, Ulladulla participant).

Great – gave me more insight into techniques and further ways to improve. (TAFE teacher, Ulladulla participant).

Great mix of relevant subjects and presenters. Very friendly atmosphere so networking was made easy. Extremely informative two days. Thank you so much. (Local Government representative, Ulladulla participant).

Excellent workshop, good content and well presented. Will be most helpful. (Environmental consultant, Ulladulla participant).

Thanks for a great workshop. I gained a lot of knowledge and met some great people. (Local Government & Landcare representative, Ulladulla participant).

Coffs Harbour

The ANPC workshops are extremely valuable in bringing together many agencies and organisations that rarely are privileged with similar opportunities to meet, network, share experiences and skills and continue to inspire good conservation work and initiatives. This is the second ANPC workshop I have attended and I look forward to the next! (Environmental consultant, Coffs Harbour participant).

Thank you for organising such a large number of excellent speakers who gave out such intelligent, wide-ranging information on their ‘disciplines’. It’s the best conference I can recall going to for a long time (and as a retired high school teacher and a member of Landcare for around 10 years, I’ve attended a lot). (Landcare group representative, Coffs Harbour participant).

The ‘hands-on’ of some of the techniques described in the workshops was great. (Department of Lands representative, Coffs Harbour participant).

Lots to think about and put into practice. (Landcare group, Coffs Harbour participant).

The workshop will be of great benefit. … The information for the conservation practitioner is highly portable and applicable in many situations. (Royal Tasmanian Botanic Gardens, Coffs Harbour participant).

This has been a most wonderful conference and certainly more than ‘useful’! Landcare group representative, Coffs Harbour participant).

Hold one in Sydney! Focus on urban rehabilitation. (Local Government representative, Sydney region, Coffs Harbour participant).

Analysis of evaluation responses

A summary of the analysis of the evaluation forms returned by the participants is provided below. Evaluation analysis revealed a high level of satisfaction across all components of the workshops.

Table 1 and Figures 1 and 2 combine the statements/questions from each section of the form – these are detailed in the Evaluation Form for each workshop. In Table 1, like responses (e.g. ‘strongly agree’ and ‘agree’ have been combined) but have been kept separate in Figures 1 and 2.

(a) Ulladulla field visits: 8 forms had no responses for this section, probably as the participant missed the field trip or had to leave early. This figure is a percentage of the 30 responses recorded.

(b) Coffs Harbour field visits: similarly, 6 forms had no responses so this figure is a percentage of the 49 responses recorded.

(c) Coffs Harbour ‘value for money’: 7 nil responses, so this figure is a percentage of the 48 responses recorded.

The 3-15 questions/statements in each section of the form (structure, content, field trips, ongoing benefits) have been combined. The form provided five response choices for each question/statement:

·       Strongly agree

·       Agree

·       Neither agree nor disagree

·       Disagree

·       Strongly disagree

Organisations represented by participants

The workshops attracted participants from a wide range of organisations and interest groups.  Across the two workshops:

·                 19% were from State Government agencies (including CMAs)

·                 15% were from Local Government

·                 14% were environmental consultants

·                 28% were from Landcare or other community groups

The high level of community group representation is pleasing. Only 6% identified as private landholders but several who identified as members of Landcare groups are also private landholders, so this figure is slightly misleading. Landholders are also harder to reach with promotion unless they are members of groups; they also may have more problem attending, because of farming responsibilities.
