1996 is a significant year in the history of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne. It marks the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Gardens, and the 100th anniversary of the death of Australia's greatest nineteenth century scientist, Baron Ferdinand von Mueller.
As part of a year-long program of events the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne will host a Conference celebrating the contribution and influence of Ferdinand von Mueller in Australian Science, and the future directions of Australian botanical systematic studies.
The conference will include two parts:
