Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria
Gill was born in Somerset, England.
He arrived in South Australia in 1839 where he set up a studio as a landscape and portrait artist. In 1846, he joined explorer John A. Horrocks on an expedition to the head of Spencer Gulf, painting watercolours along the way.
In 1852, Gill moved to Victoria and was well known for his illustrations of goldfield life, many published as lithographs. He died in Melbourne.
