NSW REGIONAL BOTANIC
GARDENS NETWORK
This Network was initially formed in 1999. The Network was
set up to work collaboratively towards horticultural/botanical excellence, advocacy,
promotional activities, assisting in each others developments, sharing exhibitions/displays,
conservation and to help the community to become more aware of the value of
plants through education and interpretation. The membership has formulated a
mission statement and objectives for the Network as goals to aim for in the
future. These are as follows:
Mission Statement
To establish a network of Regional Botanic Gardens which will
enable members to gain mutual benefit through cooperation, exchange of knowledge,
ideas and experience, sharing of resources and increased strength associated
with belonging to a large and influential organisation.
Objective
1. Promoting Horticultural/Botanical Excellence
- Region wide practitioner training days
- Sharing of staff and knowledge
- Best practice sharing (practices, standards, systems)
- Uniform approach to Integrated Pest Management
- Promote staff exchanges
- Possible accreditation of Curators/Managers
2. Advocacy
- To make collective political representation and to be a single body that
is recognised state wide with respect to Regional Gardens
- Develop smaller working groups to respond to region wide issues to gather
collective views
3. Promotion
- Promoting Regional Gardens trails as add-ons to existing NSW Tourism initiatives
- Collective publicity or promotional activities
- Promote the value of Botanic/Public Gardens to tourism
- Collective web site developmen
4. Assist individual members in development
- Advocating and/or supporting the need for and funding for conservation plans/management
plans
- Plant exchanges or contributions of redundant collections
- Rationalise collections particularly where duplication is not productiv
5. Collaborative Exhibitions/Displays
- Tours of specific collections or exhibitions eg. Bonsai display, appropriate
art collection
6. Conservation
- Preserve within each Garden a representation of local indigenous flora
- Work closely with local community conservation groups and provide assistance,
where possible, for local conservation projects
7. Education and Interpretation
- Assist each other with educational and interpretational materials/personnel
- Foster community interest in the Gardens
- Recognise the communities interest in ornamental, cultivated varieties and
local indigenous plants by providing display gardens as educational tools
- Increase the community's awareness, knowledge and appreciation of plants
