The Evolution of an Invading Plant - PhD Studentship

CSIRO Plant Industry and the Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research are offering a PhD studentship to conduct research in the systematics of Australia’s Weeds of National Significance with a focus on Mesquite.

Mesquite (Prosopis ssp.) is a highly invasive weed that contributes to environmental degradation and has substantial economic and social impacts in many countries, including Australia. As part of the CERF National Taxonomy Research & Information Network (www.taxonomy.org.au) project on systematics of environmental weeds we are funding a PhD research project on the origins and diversity of Mesquite in Australia. The project will use the collection resources of the Australian National Herbarium and it’s partner agencies together with those of weed management agencies.  We will employ a variety of molecular systematic techniques, including DNA sequencing, microsatellites and AFLP’s to identify Mesquite species present in Australia, including the composition and structure of hybrid populations.  The project will also investigate the consequences of hybridisation among Mesquite species for the evolution of invasiveness in the Australian context.

Applications Close: 31 Dec 2009

PostDoctoral Fellow - Spatial Biodiversity Analyst-Phylogeographer

The Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research requires a qualified, skilled and motivated scientist to research spatial biological information from the Australian National Herbarium together with phylogenetic data and environmental attributes (such as climate, terrain, soils) to map spatial patterns of biodiversity in environmental space.  The appointee will develop and test hypotheses relating to contemporary distribution of particular plant groups in relation to phylogenetic relationships as well as developing predictive approaches to conservation planning at regional and national scales.

Salary Range: $73k - $80k plus superannuation of up to 15.5% This salary rate is effective from 9 Dec 2009

Applications Close: 31 Dec 2009

Plant Systematist

The Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research seeks a qualified, skilled and motivated scientist to research molecular and morphological systematics of key groups of the Australian flora. The research will involve establishing the identity, diversity and origins of Australian plant groups - including characterising relationships using morphology and molecular data, developing hypotheses and phylogenies of plant lineages in an evolutionary context. In particular we are seeking a researcher to initiate a research program focusing on the Australian members of the Asteraceae, one of the largest and less understood groups of the Australian flora.  Projects will use the collection resources of the Australian National Herbarium (ANH), The Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG) and its partner Australian herbaria and overseas agencies.

Salary Range: $83k - $90k plus superannuation of up to 15.5% This salary rate is effective from 9 Dec 2009

Applications Close: 31 Dec 2009
