Integrated Botanical Information System (IBIS)

Botanical information in the Centre is managed through the Integrated Botanical Information System (IBIS) which manages data on plant names, herbarium collections, plant photographs, and information from the living collections of the Australian National Botanic Gardens. IBIS provides the link between the living plant collection and its scientific voucher collections in the herbarium.

The databases of the Centre are run on the Oracle relational database management system and staff enter and access information through a variety of custom made Oracle and World Wide Web interfaces. The integration of all the CPBR and ANBG database applications is proving to be a long, involved and complex task, involving large amounts of checking and editing the legacy data.

While staff mostly enter data directly into forms developed within the Oracle software, external clients access this data via a web interface that interogates the Oracle database in real time.

Some popular web interfaces of the IBIS database include:

Herbarium National Herbarium Specimen Information Register (ANHSIR)
Australian Plant Name Index (APNI)
Australian Plant Census (APC)
What's Its Name ? (WIN)
Australian Plant Image Index (APII)

2008 Report

Successfully migrated the production database instance and applications to Oracle 10.2 release.

Completed data mapping required for integration of the Living Collections and Herbarium datasets.

Design work for new Living Collection application over the new integrated dataset and the first stage of implementation has been completed.
