AREA OF EXPERTISE

Planning and facilitating the development of multi-agency information networks at national and global scales. The focus to date has been on biodiversity and other environmental information for policy development, decision support, research and public education.


PREVIOUS PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES

  • General Manager of the Australian Government’s Office of Spatial Data Management
  • Program Manager, Biodiversity Conservation Information System, an initiative of IUCN—the World Conservation Union
  • contractor to OECD to draft the Memorandum of Understanding for the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)
  • contractor to the European Environment Agency on the European Environment Information and Observation NETwork (EIONET)
  • contractor to United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on ECOLEX initiative to provide global access to information on environmental law, a joint project of UNEP and IUCN
  • contractor to the US Dept of Interior to draft Recommendations for the Organization and Coordination of the Inter-American Biodiversity Information Network (IABIN)
  • contractor to the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to build a prototype of the Clearing-house Mechanism. Member of the Informal Advisory Committee on the Clearing-house Mechanism to the CBD Secretariat

CURRENT
PROJECTS

Phenology Project: using flowering-time records of plants growing in the Australian National Botanic Gardens between 1975 to 1981 to determine if there have been any changes that might be due to climate change

Mangrove Project: collating biodiversity and related environmental information on Australia’s mangrove and salt marsh ecosystems
