Gardens Classroom

Preschool – (½ day, $5.00 per student)

K – Year 12 (full school day, $6.50 per student)

Join us for an engaging, ‘hands on’ indoor/outdoor learning adventure!

We can cater for groups of up to 75 students so fill the bus and stay the day for a cost effective excursion!


Water for Life

The students are divided into 3 groups for rotation through a series of activities relating to the importance of water in our environment. Our Education staff will lead two of the activities, while the visiting teacher leads the third. We will provide all the resources for a fun day, so only limited teacher preparation is required!

Life in Fresh Water (led by ANBG Education Staff)

  • pond-dipping ~ investigate the variety of plants and animals living in the Gardens pond.

  • Take a close up view of our pond critters using hand lenses or microscopes (age appropriate)

  • Food webs~ Who eats who?

 

River Erosion Model (led by ANBG Education Staff)

  • Plant your own plants, create your own snags and waterfalls while building your own river scene (your group may deconstruct a river scene)

  • Investigate erosion and deposition

  • Discuss habitat loss, past land management practices and current Landcare practices

 

DIY Explorers (led by your own teacher, with resources provided). Choose a relevant activity from:

  • You can be a Herpetologist

  • Wet and Dry Places

  • Water Strategy

  • hands-on puppet/puzzle investigation play

  • and lots of other choices…

Other options

If Water for Life isn’t what you are looking for, ask us about our Green Thumbs programs.

  • Seed collecting – what to look for, how to extract, clean and store seed

  • Plant propagation – from pre-treatment of seed, to sowing, aftercare, transplanting and cuttings

  • Plant Families – floral structures and arrangement, classifying

  • Plant identification – make plant vouchers and use keys

  • Plant Adaptations – Compare the differences between Wet and Dry environments

Preschoolers- Go Native and Wild

Join us for an engaging hour of preschool adventure for only $5. Each activity lasts for half an hour. Select 2 facilitated activities to make up your hour. If you want to stay longer…..you can choose an activity from DIY Explorers and download the resources from our website.

Echidna Story – Read Kootear the Echidna (A dreamtime story from the Boorooberongal/Darkinjung people) and make an echidna from a She Oak cone to take home.

Make a Pooter – Discover the interesting life of bugs by viewing them up close

Make a Worm Farm – Find out what worms eat and watch them grow

Pond Dipping – Catch water bugs and view them using magnifiers and on TV

Grow a Plant – Learn to sow seeds and pot up your own native plant

Wet and Dry Places – Explore the Mallee and Rainforest; find the differences

Aboriginal Artifacts – Explore the objects and the plants that were used to make them

Botanical Expeditions

$5.00 per student

  • maximum 50 students per one-hour session

  • 51 students or more is a 2¼ hour program (1 hour Botanical Expedition rotated with a 1 hour DIY Explorer)

 

Join our Guides on a Botanical Expedition in small groups of 10-12 students for a one hour session. Teachers and support persons are free and most welcome.

Our Botanical Expedition Guides will meet groups on arrival and deliver a brief introduction, organise storage of bags and set off with their smaller team. Please divide your classes into groups before arrival.

Around Oz in an Hour - Introduction to Australia’s Plants

Take in some of the 7,000 different Australian native plants living on Black Mountain. Discover the huge diversity of our unique indigenous flora and work out how this might have happened.

In this activity students will:

  • find out about this national institution which belongs to all Australians, and why botanic gardens are worth visiting

  • see first hand some of the diversity of Australia’s unique flora

  • find out how they might take some action for the environment

Using Bush Plants

Investigate traditional Aboriginal use of Australia’s native plants and the changes in indigenous and non-indigenous use over the past 200 years. Handle the collection of artifacts on display and work out how they were made and used.

In this activity students will learn about:

  • Aboriginal peoples’ extensive knowledge, technology and understanding about the Australian bush

  • how indigenous and non-indigenous Australians have adapted to new technologies and continue to use native plants today

  • Download resources for pre and post-visit activities

Adaptations of Australian Plants

Investigate survival mechanisms that plants have evolved by living in different Australian landscapes. Discover adaptations of mallee, rainforest, grassland or alpine plants.

In this activity students will learn:

  • about Australia’s diverse range of landscapes, soils and climates

  • about a range of adaptive features that allow plants to survive in their habitats

  • Download resources for pre and post-visit activities.

River Erosion Model

Get mud on your hands when you investigate how rivers work. See erosion in action and find ways to reduce soil loss.

In this activity students will learn:

  • about water erosion – causes, features, effects

  • about past and present land management practices

  • how rock riffles, fallen trees and plants slow running water

Who Lives Here?

Younger visitors (and the young-at-heart) will receive an early introduction to Australian habitats and the importance of food chains and biodiversity. Borrow our laminated bird resources for your session. Download the booklet and teacher notes with suggested answers and explanations.

You can be a Herpetologist

Have fun while investigating for yourself some potential habitats for reptiles and amphibians in the Gardens. Students are encouraged to look at the whole range of features that make up a successful habitat. Download the teacher’s rationale, what to do on the day and resources that are also available as colour laminated sheets.

Floral Emblems of Australia

Do this one near your school. Take up the challenge of determining a floral emblem for your school, town or district. Download the Floral Emblems of Australia Education Kit, and e-mail us for a copy of the poster.

Mystery on Black Mountain - Is there treasure buried on Black Mountain?

Use the booklet to identify the bushranger and share in the reward! Find the letters by following cryptic clues and drawings, then unravel these letters. In the meantime, learn about Aussie flora without even noticing it! Download booklets.

Twilight Forest Adventure

This is an evening program. Cost: $8 per person, minimum $200 per group.
Maximum 80 people in total.

Twilight Forest Adventure - Discover the mysteries of the rainforest at night.

Join our Twilight Guides for a fun evening by torchlight as we put all our senses to the test.

Adventures operate nominally between 7.30 – 9 pm on weekdays. Torches, waterproof ponchos and hot chocolate provided.
