Cephalomanes Presl

Erect terrestrial ferns of small to moderate size. Rhizome compact and erect, with crowded fronds and long fibrous roots. Fronds short- to long-stipitate, the stipes unwinged, bearing stiff dark multicellular hairs, the lamina broadly oblong or lanceolate, simply pinnate to pinnate-pinnatifid, the rachis unwinged, the pinnae +/- obtuse-oblong, dimidiate with the basiscopic side much-reduced, +/- serrate often with long acropetal lacinae, the acroscopic margin incised or lacerate, texture harsh, veins simple or several-times-forked, each branch ending in a marginal tooth. Sporangia sessile, borne on an elongate columnar receptacle, mostly terminal on the +/- contracted subapical acroscopic lobes of the pinnae, immersed in an elongate tubular involucre (indusium), the lip entire, truncate or dilated, the receptable exserted when mature; paraphyses lacking, annulus complete, oblique. Spores trilete.

Selenodesmium (Prantl)Copel.

Erect terrestrial ferns of small to moderate size. Rhizome short-creeping to compact and erect, with stiff dark multicellular hairs, crowded fronds and long fibrous roots. Fronds long-stipitate, the stipes deciduously setose, the lamina broadly ovate, pinnately compound, the ultimate segments with several forked veins, each branch ending in a shallow marginal lobe, the margin otherwise entire, texture firm, glabrous, the major axes with clavate hairs. Sporangia sessile, borne on an elongate columnar receptacle, terminal on the segments or lobes, immersed in a +/- winged, elongate tubular involucre (indusium), the lip sometimes slightly bivalved, notched or entire, the receptacle exserted when mature; paraphyses lacking, annulus complete, oblique. Spores trilete.

Species in Papuasia

1a. Tips and segments normally flat S. dentatum
Tips and segments normally curled S. obscurum

Macroglena (Presl)Copel.

Small, erect terrestrial or subepiphytic ferns. Rhizome long-creeping to short-creeping or compact and erect, with stiff dark multicellular hairs, crowded fronds and fibrous roots. Fronds stipitate, the lamina broadly oblong or lanceolate, pinnately compound, finely divided, the expanded portion reduced to a narrow wing either side of the axis, the ultimate segments thus single-veined, entire and bristle-like, the axes branching in different planes so that the frond is +/- columnar. Sporangia sessile, borne on an elongate columnar receptacle, terminal on the segments or lobes, immersed in a +/- cup-shaped involucre (indusium), the lip +/- truncate and entire, the receptacle exserted when mature; paraphyses lacking, annulus complete, oblique. Spores trilete, globose.

Nesopteris Copel.

Erect terrestrial ferns of moderate size. Rhizome compact and erect, with crowded fronds and long fibrous roots. Fronds long-stipitate, the stipes very narrowly winged, the lamina lanceolate to ovate, pinnately compound with fine single-veined ultimate segments, margins entire, texture firm, the major axes bearing minute calvate hairs. Sporangia sessile, borne on an elongate columnar receptacle, terminal on the segments, immersed in a winged, tubular involucre (indusium), the lip entire, sometimes ciliate, the receptacle exserted when mature; paraphyses lacking, annulus complete, oblique. Spores trilete.

Species in Papuasia

1a. Frond narrowly ovate N. grande
Frond round-ovate N. intermedia

Callistopteris Copel.

More of less erect epiphytes or subepiphytes of moderate size. Rhizome compace and erect, with crowded fronds and long fibrous roots. Fronds long-stipitate, the stipes unwinged, bearing stiff bristle-like hairs, the lamina lanceolate to ovate, pinnately compounde with fine single-veined ultimate segments, margins entire, texture membranous, the major axes with fine filiform hairs. Sporangia sessile, borne on an elongate columnar receptacle, terminal on the segments, immersed in winged, obconic or urceolate involucre (indusium), the lip entire, truncate or sometimes slightly bivalved, the receptacle exserted when mature; paraphyses lacking, annulus complete, oblique. Spores trilete.
