Terrestrial ferns of mostly small to moderate size. Rhizome slender, creeping, sometimes elongate, radially symmetric, dictyostelic, scales bearing superficial, unicellular, sperical, acicular or capitate unicellular hairs. Fronds long-stipitate, the stipe with 2 vascular bundles at the base uniting upward into a single U-shaped vascular strand, lamina pinnate with pinnately deeply lobed pinnae, the basal lobes sometimes free, margin entire but the basal acrospic lobe often enlarged and +/- crenate, basal pinnae little or not reduced, or less commonly several pairs of basal pinnae gradually smaller, midribs of pinnae grooved above, but grooves not confluent with rachis groove, unicellular hairs or few reduced scales variously present on both surfaces, sometimes septate hairs present on lower surface of costae, sessle glands nearly always present on the abaxial surface, veins in a pinnate group in each pinna-lobe, veinets all simple, free, terminating in the margin above the sinus membrane. Sori round, indusiate, medial on the veins; sporangia on a short 2-seriate stalk, lacking hairs or glands (rarely a sessile gland on the sporangia stalk). Spores monolete, opaque, with a narrow wing.
