Syngramma J.Sm.

Erect terrestrial ferns of medium size. Rhizome short-creeping to +/- compact, solenostelic, young parts protected by dark glossy bristles. Fronds long-stipitate, the stipes basally +/- terete, distally grooved abaxially, often purplish, 3 vascular bundles at the base arranged in an open square open at the top, uniting apically to become a single "V"-shaped strand, the lamina pedate, ternate or simple, the loss elliptic to lanceolate, coriaceous to subcoriaceous, glabrous, margins entire, veins +/- immersed, simple or forked, close and parallel, anastomosing near the margin to form 1-2 series of submarginal hexagonal areoles, often alongate, lacking free included veinlets. Sporangia in continuous sori elongate along the entire length of the paralel veins, exindusiate, paraphyses numerous with enlarged apical cells or lacking, annulus longitudinal, interrupted of 14-17 thickened cells. Spores trilete, globose.

Sect. Syngramma: fronds simple.

Sect. Craspedodictyum: fronds ternate or pedate, simple only in young fronds.

Species in Papuasia

Toxopteris Trev.

Each terrestrial ferns of small to medium size. Rhizome short-creeping to ascending, with crowded fronds radially arranged, solenostelic, the young parts protected by dark glossy bristles. Fronds short- to long-stipitate, the stipes +/- winged, grooved above, 2 vascular bundles at the base, +/- parallel or in a broad "V", not uniting apically, the lamina simple, costate with the costa continuous with the stipe, +/- linear-lanceolate, glabrous, coriaceous or subcoriaceous, the margins cartilaginous, entire or toothed; veins immersed, simple or forked, close and parallel, anastomosing at the margin to form a single intramarginal vein. Sporangia in contunuous sori elongate along the entire length (usually) of the veins, exindusiate, paraphyses numerous, filamentous or with enlarged apical cells, annulus longitudinal, interrupted of 15-20 thickened cells. Spores trilete, globose.

Species in Papuasia

1a. Fronds dimorphic, the sterile 2-3 cm wide, fertile longer than sterile, to c. 1 cm wide, margins +/- entire; sori occupying almost the whole length of the veins... T. borneensis
Fronds not dimorphic, c.1-1.5 cm wide; margins serrulate; sori on distal part of veins only, not close to midrib... T. cartilagidens
