What follows is a highly abbreviated account of the progress in the study of Australian (macro)fungi in the years since European settlement in 1788. This account highlights some of the major players and broad trends. Much of the material is taken from the chapter by Tom May and Ian Pascoe in Fungi of Australia, Volume 1A, which provides a great deal more detail and a comprehensive bibliography.
