Assessing the risks of plant invasions arising from collections in tropical botanical gardens / Wayne Dawson ...[et al]
Biodiversity and Conservation Vol 17(8) 2008: 1979-1995
Tropical botanical gardens have played an important role in the distribution, naturalisation and spread of non-native plants worldwide. Appropriate guidance relating to risk assessments of established botanical garden collections is often scarce. The authors use the Amanai Botanical Gardens (ABG), Tanzania, as a case study to highlight appropriate methods to assess the risks posed by existing and future collections in tropical botanical gardens.

Great minds think (too much) alike.
The Economist Vol 388(8589) July 19-25 2008: 82
Is the web narrowing scientists' expertise? Online databases of scientific journals have made life easier for scientists as well as publishers. No more ambling down to the library, searching through the musty stacks and queuing up for the photocopier. Instead, a few clicks of a mouse can bring forth the desired papers and maybe others that the reader did not know of. Well, that's how it’s supposed to work, but does it?

Paradises invaded / Rhitu Chatterjee.
Environmental Science & Technology Vol 42(13) July 1 2008: 4626- 4629
Increasing global trade and travel have accelerated the movement of plants, animals, pests, and pathogens to the point that invasive species are infringing upon many protected natural areas. These non natives can place a burden on parks' water resources and also reduce their ability to absorb carbon. The author talks with ecologists, park managers, and conservationists from many parts of the world who are fighting an uphill battle to save the last hot spots of biological diversity from invasive species.
