RAINFOREST PLANTS

Figgis P. (ed.) & L. Meier Rainforests of Australia. Weldons, 1985 (264 pp.). [Lavishly illustrated with colour photos of plants, animals, and rainforest scenery. Good quality text, covering the various types of Australian rainforest and quasi-rainforest communities and plants, and outlining their evolution and ecology.]

Floyd, A.G. Rainforest trees of mainland south-eastern Australia Inkata, 1989. (420 pp.). [A useful book, providing keys and descriptions for most woody rainforest species of N.S.W. and Victoria, with many line illustrations.] Floyd, A.G. Australian rainforests in New South Wales, 2 vols. Surry Beatty & Sons, 1990. (136 and 180 pp., large format). [Not an identification guide, but an overview of the rainforest communities with many useful references. Vol. 1 covers the physical structure of the forest, the classification of rainforest types, their distribution, conservation, and modes of natural and artificial regeneration. Vol. 2 looks in detail at the rainforest types, the vegetational alliances that occur in them, and gets down to specific discussion of sites of these around the state.]

Francis, W.D. Australian rain-forest trees, 4th edn. AGPS, 1985. [Standard work on the subject. Some black and white photos.]

Harden, G.J. & J.B. Williams Fruits - a guide to some common and unusual fruits found in rainforests. UNE, 1979. (12 pp.) [A field guide to identification of fruits of rainforest plants; not comprehensive but very useful; key with line drawings.]

Hauser, J. Fragments of Green - An identification field guide for rainforest plants of the Greater Brisbane region. Rainforest Conservation Society Inc. (381 pp.) [ An easy to follow guide with line drawings of each species described. Trees and shrubs only.

Jones, D.L. Ornamental rainforest plants in Australia. Reed, 1986. [Emphasis on Australian species; short descriptions with cultivation notes; some line drawings, some colour photos; deals with a surprising number of species which are written up hardly anywhere else.]

Pearson, S. & A. Pearson Rainforest plants of eastern Australia. Kangaroo Press, 1992. (224 pp.) [A highly misleading title - the book is strongly biased in species coverage to Queensland and northern N.S.W. Nevertheless a useful book, with an innovative tabular key (with flower colour-coding) and high-quality colour photos. The notes on species are lamentably brief.]

Williams, J.B. & G.J. Harden Rainforest climbing plants [of NSW]. UNE, 1984. (47 pp.) [A field guide to NSW species. Vegetative character keys, and line drawings of each species.]

Williams, J.B. Checklist of the rainforest flora of New South Wales, 3rd edn. UNE, 1984. [Recognized names, authors, common names, community type, southern limits.]

Williams, J.B. et al. Trees and shrubs in rainforests of New South Wales and southern Queensland. UNE, 1984. (142 pp). [Artificial keys based largely on vegetative characters, to 541 species; short descriptions and line drawings of each species (leaves and fruits). Very useful.]
