Lightning Ridge swimming pool

Lightning Ridge (map) is in north central New South Wales, about 50 kilometres south of the Queensland border. It is well known as an opal mining area but the the attraction shown below is far more impressive than the opals.

The photograph was taken in 1998 by Catherine Jordan, the librarian at the Australian National Botanic Gardens, and she has kindly allowed its use on this website. During her visit to Lightning Ridge the swimming pool was empty for maintenance.
