Aboriginal People & Place

The NSW Southern Tablelands and ACT include the traditional lands of the Ngunnawal of the Southern Tablelands, the Ngarigu of the Monaro Tablelands and Snowy Mountains and the Walgalu of the Tumut Valley and high country east to the Murrumbidgee River (see 'S.E. Sheet' map in Tindale, 1974; Flood, 1996: 4).

During the period of European settlement, the groups were not generally known by these names and there has been some debate over their recent history (see Introduction in Jackson-Nakano, A., 2001). Today the Ngunnawal people identify with the Canberra region and are referred to in this way here.
