Valentine's Day

In one of my fungal books, bought second hand many years ago, the following illustration was added inside the cover by some previous owner.

I have no Idea who Nancy and Kate were, nor who the recipient was, nor why the year 1950 is crossed out and replaced by 1951. Was it simply a mistake? Or is it a tale of spurned love, the offering rejected in 1950 and given afresh the next year to someone more receptive?
