What is IBIS ?

IBIS, the Integrated Botanical Information System, is a single relational database that links the data held in the various collections of the Australian National Botanic Gardens, the Australian National Herbarium, the Australian Plant Image Index and the Australian Plant Name Index. We rely heavily on open source solutions (Apache, Perl, Java) and employ national and global standards (HISPID,TDWG,BioCase) for both information management and delivery where-ever possible. Oracle provides our production RDBMS (and SQL engine).

Living Plants

This tells you what Section they are in and how many there are.

Herbarium Specimens

Australian National Herbarium Specimen Information Register - ANHSIR
Available to general users, but more detailed information is available to registered users with a reason for such access.

Photographs

Search for digital images using Genus (and species) .
This searches from over 6,000 photos from the APII that have been digitized on Photo-CDs and displays them.

Search for records of all plant photos using Genus and species (only 20% digitized).     •
This searches records of over 20,000 plant photos held in the APII, those that are digitized are displayed as thumbnails.

Search for digital images of plant photos by Family.
This only searches photos that have been digitized. It uses frames. (A non-frame version is accessable).

Search for non-plant photos using key words (landscapes, animals, national parks etc).
Searches miscellaneous photos held by the ANBG, you must surround each key word with a '%', ie Key Words: %Kakadu%

Australian Biodiversity Information Facility - ABIF     •

The flora component in a collaboration between Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS) and ANBG.

International Plant Name Index - Search IPNI
IBIS contributes its data, together with Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and the Harvard University Herbarium (about IPNI)

Global Biodiversity Information Facility - GBIF
IBIS contributes data to GBIF whose aim is to make the world's biodiversity data freely and universally available on the Internet.

Taxonomic Databases Working Group - TDWG
ibis contributes through TDWG membership, participation on working groups for Access to Biological Collections Data (ABCD) and Taxonomic Names ( (TCS) and support of the TDWG Infrastructure Project (TIP). For current status of these initiatives try the TDWG Wiki
