  Thallus loosely adnate, orbicular. Lobes linear, 0.4–0.8 mm wide. Upper surface pale grey-white to olive-grey, becoming brown after storage, smooth, without soredia and isidia; lobe margins without white rim. Medulla with chondroid strand of parallel, longitudinally arranged hyphae in middle or lower medulla. Lower surface with continuous spongiostratum which often projects beyond lobe margins, uniformly attached to lower medullary hyphae or chondroid strand, solid, brown-black to black; rhizines scattered, simple, uniformly attached to lower medullary hyphae or chondroid strand. Apothecia not seen. Pycnidia saucer-shaped. Conidia 5–6 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: Chemical race 1: cortex K+ yellow or K-; medulla K-, C+ rose, KC+ red, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin and anziaic acid. Chemical race 2: cortex K+ weak yellow or K-; medulla K-, C-, KC+ rose, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin and AT2 (unidentified substance).
