| Thallus loosely adnate, coriaceous, to 5–10 cm wide. Lobes irregular, broad, rounded, 5–15 mm wide; margins crenate, ascending or revolute, commonly lobulate; cilia sparse to moderately dense, conspicuous, variable, 0.3–5 mm long. Upper surface pale grey to grey, shiny, strongly white maculate, smooth, becoming irregularly cracked, isidia lacking; soralia mainly marginal or submarginal, linear, pustular and punctiform or sometimes spreading and becoming confluent on revolute lobes; soredia farinose. Medulla white. Lower surface smooth, shiny, black, with a broad, brown, erhizinate marginal zone; rhizines sparse, simple, slender. Apothecia rare, pedicellate, 3–10 mm wide; disc perforate or imperforate, often radially split; thalline exciple strongly rugose then sorediate. Ascospores 12–30 × 8–17 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia filiform, 10–16 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C-, KC+ red, P-; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, alectoronic acid (major) and a-collatolic acid (major or minor). | ||
