  Thallus loosely adnate, membranaceous to coriaceous, to 8–12 cm wide. Lobes rounded or irregularly incised, 8–10 mm wide; margins entire or crenate, often ascending; cilia sparse to dense, conspicuous, slender, 3–6 mm long. Upper surface pale grey to grey-green, shiny, emaculate or faintly maculate, often uneven and foveolate, isidia lacking; soralia marginal, linear on broad lobes or terminal on narrow, lateral lobes; soredia farinose. Medulla white, with occasional patches of yellow-orange pigment adjacent to lower cortex. Lower surface black, with a broad, brown or mottled, erhizinate marginal zone; rhizines scattered, mainly simple or rarely branched, long. Apothecia rare, pedicellate, 4–7 mm wide; disc imperforate; thalline exciple dentate-lobulate or sorediate. Ascospores 26–32 × 12–15 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia sublageniform, 7–8 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C-, KC+ red-brown, P+ orange-red; pigmented medulla K+ purple; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, protocetraric acid (major), skyrin (in pigmented medulla) and protolichesterinic acid.
     
  A scattered species in Australia, occurring on bark of trees in coastal woodland and hinterland montane forests in Qld; also occurs in southern Africa, Madagascar, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Mexico and South America.
