  Thallus foliose, moderately adnate to adnate, to 10 cm wide. Lobes barely imbricate, irregular to sublinear-elongate, irregularly branched, 1–4 mm wide; rarely developing laciniae in thallus centre, 0.4–1 mm wide. Upper surface grey to dark grey, very shiny towards lobe apices, becoming dull, mostly flat, smooth but developing transverse cracks and becoming rugose, lacking maculae and soredia, blackening; lobe margins often blackening; lobe apices slightly brown-tinged; isidia dense in thallus centre, scattered on marginal lobes, cylindrical, slender, becoming coralloid-branched, with apices syncorticate and intact. Lower surface rugulose, jet black, sometimes brown towards lobe margins; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, black. Apothecia sessile to subpedicellate, to 10 mm wide; disc concave then undulate-distorted, developing stellate cracks, pale brown to deep cinnamon-brown; thalline exciple thin, involute, becoming undulate, isidiate. Ascospores 8–10 × 5–6 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia 5–6 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, P+ orange; containing atranorin, norstictic acid (major), connorstictic acid (minor), salazinic acid (major), consalazinic acid (major), ±constipatic acid and ±protoconstipatic acid.
     
  A very common species in southern Australia occurring in montane and tableland areas (W.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.). This species also occurs in New Zealand.
