Lichen marginellus Sw., Prodr. 147 (1788). T: Jamaica, O.P.Swartz; n.v.
 
     
  Thallus foliose, closely or loosely adnate, irregular or subradiate, 2–8 cm wide, 50–220 µm thick, leaden grey or browned. Lobes orbicular, 1.5–7 mm wide, ±flat; margins often ascending, undulate, entire or slightly erose; surfaces ±strongly wrinkled; usually not isidiate. Lower surface naked or with small rhizines. Apothecia usually marginal, common but often aborted, sessile to adnate, 0.1–1 mm wide; thalline exciple concolorous with thallus or pale cream ±densely isidiate, with ±clavate to squamuliform isidia; disc concave to flat, pale brown to reddish brown. Ascospores ellipsoidal, ±muriform, 15–26 × 9–12 µm; apices acute. Pycnidia not seen.
     
  Distributed from north-eastern Qld to Richmond R. in N.S.W., growing on bark. Common in tropical and subtropical America and recorded from the Philippines.
