Fertile branches distinctly flattened, short and broad to relatively long, slender and strap-like, 2–4 (–8) cm long, 2–4.5 (–6) mm wide, usually sparingly branched, but sometimes regularly and repeatedly branched, and/or with abundant small lateral branchlets. Upper surface pale olive-green to greenish brown, sometimes quite dark brown, especially in more exposed situations, smooth or usually ±rugose above the apothecia; young branches rarely pruinose. Apothecia common, terminal, 2–4 (–6) mm wide, sometimes with ±abundant branchlets along the margin. Mazaedia ventrally exposed early in their development, large and prominent. Ascospores (9–) 10–13.5 (–17.5) µm diam., reddish brown. Conidia oblong, 3–4.5 × 1.5–2 µm. CHEMISTRY: Medulla K–, P–; containing patagonic acid, isopatagonic acid, ascomatic acid, methyl ascomatate (trace), 7-O-methylnorascomatic acid (trace), methyl 7-O-methylnorascomatate (trace) and norascomatic acid (trace), usnic acid (trace in apothecia) and 4-O-demethyl-sphaerophorin (minor).
Occurs in N.S.W., Vic. and Tas.; epiphytic in various types of cool-temperate rainforest and occasionally in wet-sclerophyll forest. Also in New Zealand, Argentina and Chile.
