  Thallus straggling, to 3–7 cm wide. Lobes strap-shaped, subdichotomously branched, becoming partly canaliculate, 0.5–2.5 mm wide; margins ciliate; cilia conspicuous, simple or sparingly dichotomously branched, 0.5–2 mm long. Upper surface grey to grey-green, flat, smooth, matt, often finely white-maculate; soralia at or near lobe apices, hooded or revolute; soredia farinose, white or becoming grey-black. Lower surface shiny, rugose, often distinctly channelled, black, pale brown towards lobe apices; rhizines sparse, simple or squarrosely branched. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ yellow then red, C-, P+ orange; containing atranorin, chloroatranorin, salazinic acid (major), consalazinic acid and protolichesterinic acid.
     
  In Australia, this species is known from a single collection (Vic.); also known from New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Africa, North, Central and South America. Grows on bark and, rarely, on rock.
