  Thallus foliose, loosely to moderately adnate, to 7–10 cm wide. Lobes sometimes imbricate, flat, subirregular to sublinear-elongate, irregularly branched, 1–4 mm wide; apices subascending or not. Upper surface yellow-green, shiny, emaculate, smooth, lacking soredia and isidia; lobes often with black margins. Medulla white. Lower surface pale brown to dark brown; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, robust, yellow-brown to blackish brown. Apothecia subpedicellate, 1.5–5 mm wide; disc concave, dark brown; thalline exciple entire, involute, becoming undulating. Ascospores 8.5–9.6 × 4.5–5.5 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 5–6 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K-, C-, KC-, P-; containing usnic acid, scabrosin 4,4'-diacetate, scabrosin 4-acetate 4'-butyrate, scabrosin 4,4'-dibutyrate and scabrosin 4-acetate 4'-hexanoate.
     
  On rock in dry subalpine areas of N.S.W., Vic. and Tas.; also oin southern W.A., south-eastern S.A. and central Australia. Occurs in the South Is. of New Zealand (Otago).
