  Thallus subcrustose, very tightly adnate, to 2–4 cm wide. Lobes rarely imbricate, very congested, subirregular, irregularly branched, 0.2–0.5 (–1) mm wide; ±developing convex, branched laciniae in areolate region. Upper surface yellow-green, darkening to deep olive-brown or blackish on older lobes near thallus centre, flat or convex, dull, emaculate, irregularly cracked, forming convex areolae in thallus centre, lacking soredia and isidia. Medulla white. Lower surface flat, straw-yellow, often darkening towards lobe apices; rhizines sparse, simple, brown to pale brown. Apothecia sessile, 1–4 mm wide; disc deeply concave becoming ±flat, dark brown to brown; thalline exciple smooth, thick, entire, ±undulating. Ascospores 7–9 × 3.5–5.5 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 5 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K-, C-, KC+ rose, P-; containing usnic acid and norlobaridone.
     
  Apparently rare but possibly overlooked, endemic, usually found on rock in upland areas in south-eastern and central Australia (W.A., N.T., S.A., N.S.W. and Vic.).
