  Thallus foliose, adnate to tightly adnate, to 5–10 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, flat, irregular, elongate, irregularly branched, 1–2 (–5) mm wide; margins slightly thickened; apices rounded or shallowly notched. Upper surface yellow-green, shiny, emaculate, smooth at margins, becoming rugose in thallus centre, without soredia; lobe margins blackened; isidia dense in thallus centre, absent at margins, cylindrical, short, slender or slightly inflated, becoming coralloid, apices syncorticate and pale. Medulla white. Lower surface shiny, pale tan to brown, or rarely dark brown in places; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, short, simple or rarely dichotomously branched, concolorous. Apothecia sessile, 2–8 mm wide; disc concave, shiny, red-brown to dark brown; thalline exciple entire, rather thin, often disappearing in mature apothecia, smooth, shiny, isidiate. Ascospores 8–10 × 6–7 µm. Pycnidia rare. Conidia bifusiform, 6–7 × 0.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, UV-; medulla K+ yellow then dark red, C-, KC-, P+ orange; containing usnic acid, salazinic acid and consalazinic acid; rarely containing norstictic acid (trace), protoconstipatic acid (trace) and constipatic acid (trace).
     
  Variable, widespread, on rock and dead wood in areas of moderate rainfall, subarid and arid areas (W.A., N.T., S.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T. and Vic.); also on both islands of New Zealand, in Mexico, U.S.A. and Japan.
