  Thallus foliose, loosely to moderately adnate, to 4–12 cm wide. Lobes imbricate, flat to slightly concave or convex, sublinear to irregular, 1–4 mm wide, becoming laciniate; laciniae often imbricate and entangled, but not terete and fruticose. Upper surface pale yellowish brown to reddish brown or dark brown, shiny, ±smooth throughout or becoming strongly rugose in centre, distinctly maculate, without isidia; lobe apices often pruinose. Lower surface dark brown to black, often paler near lobe apices; rhizines moderately dense to dense, simple, to 1 mm long, concolorous. Apothecia common, sessile to shortly pedicellate, to c. 12 mm wide; disc generally strongly concave, then flattening, dark brown to black-brown; thalline exciple entire to crenulate or somewhat lacerate, often quite rugose. Ascospores 7.5–11 × 5–6 µm. Pycnidia common. Conidia bifusiform, 5.5–6.5 × 1 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K-, HNO3+ blue-green; medulla K- or K+ dingy brown, C+ slowly yellow (sometimes obscure) or C+ rose, KC+ dull orange-red, P-, UV-; containing glomelliferic, glomellic and perlatolic acids with occasional accessory gyrophoric acid.
     
  Scattered in eastern Australia (S.A., Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T. and Vic.); also occurs in Europe from southern Scandinavia to North Africa and from the United Kingdom to Kazakhstan. Grows on rock.
