  Thallus foliose, tightly adnate, to 10 cm wide. Lobes imbricate or not, irregular, subirregularly branched, 1–3 mm wide. Upper surface pale grey to dark grey, flat, very shiny towards lobe apices, becoming dull, emaculate, developing transverse cracks and becoming areolate, without soredia; lobe margins blackened at apices; isidia dense in thallus centre, scattered on marginal lobes, globose, becoming cylindrical and inflated, especially at apices, sparingly branched or rarely becoming coralloid-branched; isidia apices epicorticate, intact. Lower surface shiny, rugulose, pale brown to brown, often darker towards lobe apices; rhizines sparse to moderately dense, simple, often tufted, slender, concolorous or darkening. Apothecia sessile, to 1.5 mm wide; disc shallowly concave, dark brown; thalline exciple thick and involute at first, persistent, isidiate. Ascospores 7–9 × 4–6 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K+ intense yellow then dark red, C-, P+ intense yellow; containing atranorin, salazinic acid (major), consalazinic acid (minor), ±norstictic acid (trace), ±protocetraric acid (trace) and with or without an unidentified fatty acid (trace).
     
  An endemic species common in arid, inland areas of W.A., N.T. and S.A.
