Astrothelium variolosum (Ach.) Müll.Arg.

Trypethelium variolosum Ach., Syn. Meth. Lich. 104 (1814).

T: America, coll. unknown; iso: BM-ACH.

  Thallus green to grey, smooth. Pseudostromata irregular, not distinctly raised, whitish, lacking pigments. Hamathecium not inspersed. Ascospores 3-septate, 20–23 × 7–9 μm.
CHEMISTRY: Thallus and pseudostromata UV+ yellow, K–, containing lichexanthone (or 1,8-dihydroxy-3,6-dimethoxyxanthone).
  Rare on bark in north-eastern Qld. Pantropical, mostly in open, lowland areas.
