Diploschistes gyrophoricus Lumbsch & Elix

T: 1 km S of Mt Palm, Lowry Peaks Range, North Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand, J.A.Elix 6892; holo: CANB; iso: CHR.

  Thallus epilithic, to c. 1.5 mm thick, whitish to greenish grey, dull, rough, rimose-areolate, epruinose. Epinecral layer to c. 20 µm thick. Algal layer continuous, well developed; calcium oxalate crystals sparse, scattered, small. Vegetative propagules not seen. Ascomata conspicuous, blackish, to c. 0.8 mm diam., ±rounded, perithecioid, solitary, immersed. Disc not visible from above. Pores minute, to c. 0.1 mm diam., ±rounded; inner and apical proper exciple visible from above, free, black, epruinose. Thalline rim margin thin, ±rounded, concolorous with and having the same surface features as the thallus, immersed. Proper exciple free, thick, blackish brown, non-amyloid. Hymenium 120–150 µm thick, not inspersed, moderately conglutinated; lateral paraphyses conspicuous, to c. 30 µm long. Epihymenium hyaline to pale brown, egranulose. Asci 8-spored. Ascospores broadly ellipsoidal, with ±rounded ends, brown, non-amyloid, 20–30 × 14–18 µm, with 5–7 × 2–4 locules; locules ±rounded to angular; septa thick, regular; ascospore wall thin to thick; endospore thick. Pycnidia not seen.
CHEMISTRY: Thallus K–, C+ red, P–; containing gyrophoric acid (major), 2”-O-methyl-gyrophoric acid (minor), orsellinic acid (minor), lecanoric acid (minor).
  Occurs on exposed, siliceous rocks in N.S.W. and A.C.T.; also in New Zealand and South America.
