  Thallus superficial, to c. 0.7 mm thick, whitish grey, dull, rough, verrucose-areolate, farinose, whitish-pruinose. Epinecral layer to c. 30 µm thick. Algal layer continuous, well developed; calcium oxalate crystals sparse, scattered, small. Vegetative propagules not seen. Ascomata conspicuous, blackish, to c. 0.7 mm diam., ±rounded, perithecioid, solitary, immersed. Disc not visible from above. Pores small, to c. 0.2 mm diam., ±rounded; inner and apical proper exciple visible from above, free, black, epruinose to slightly greyish-pruinose. Thalline rim margin thin, concolorous with and having the same surface features as the thallus, slightly elevated. Proper exciple free, thick, blackish brown, non-amyloid. Hymenium 100–130 µm thick, not inspersed, moderately conglutinated; lateral paraphyses conspicuous, to c. 30 µm long. Epihymenium hyaline to pale brown, granulose. Asci 8-spored. Ascospores broadly ellipsoidal, with ±rounded to subacute ends, brown, non-amyloid, 14–22 × 5.5–9.0 µm, with 3–5 × 1–2 locules; locules ±rounded to angular; septa thick, regular; ascospore wall thin to thick; endospore thick. Pycnidia immersed in the thallus; pores blackish brown. Conidia 4–6 × 1.0–1.5 µm.
CHEMISTRY: Thallus K+ yellowish, C+ red, P–; containing lecanoric acid (major), diploschistesic acid (major), orsellinic acid (minor).
  Grows on soil mainly in semi-arid regions of southern Australia (W.A., S.A., N.S.W. and Vic.); also in southern Africa.
