Hypocenomyce isidiosa Elix

Mycotaxon 94: 219 (‘2005’) [2006]

T: central track, Charles Gardner Flora Reserve, 20 km SW of Tammin along old York Rd, W.A., 31°47’24”S, 117°28’07”E, on dead charred wood in Eucalyptus woodland with Casuarina and Acacia in shallow gully, 22 Apr. 2004, J.A.Elix 31849; holo: PERTH; iso: CANB.

  Thallus crustose to subsquamulose, 1–4 cm wide, composed of scattered granules or 0.1–1.2 mm wide areolae, adnate, separate, not proliferating, green-brown; margin somewhat crenulate and ±upturned; areolae and granules soon developing a dense covering of isidia which dominates the thallus; soredia absent. Isidia granular, globose to subglobose, 0.03–0.05 mm tall, with conspicuously blackened apices, becoming coralloid and densely crowded, forming cerebriform conglomerate clusters 0.5–2.0 mm wide. Apothecia and pycnidia not seen.
CHEMISTRY: Cortex and medulla K–, C–, KC–, P–, UV+ faint white; containing confriesiic acid (major), friesiic acid (minor).
  This endemic, lignicolous species is confined to south-western W.A.
