Ocellularia ecorticata Mangold

T: Amama State Forest Park, 6 km SW of Amamoor, S of Gympie, Qld, alt. 150 m, on bark in rainforest remnant, 3 Aug. 1983, M.E.Hale 831739; holo: US.

  Thallus endophloeodal, to c. 50 (–150) µm thick, greyish green, dull, pruinose, rough, continuous, ecorticate. Algal layer weakly developed, ±discontinuous; calcium oxalate crystals absent. Vegetative propagules not seen. Ascomata inconspicuous, to c. 0.3 mm diam., ±rounded, apothecioid, solitary to marginally fused, immersed. Disc not visible from above. Pores formed by the thalline rim margin, to c. 0.1 mm diam., ±rounded, entire, often slightly annulate, rather thin, concolorous with the thallus to brownish; thalline rim incurved. Proper exciple fused, moderately thin, yellowish internally to orange or reddish brown marginally, in older stages apically dark grey, non-amyloid. Hymenium to c. 80 µm thick, not inspersed, strongly conglutinated; paraphyses bent, ±interwoven, unbranched, with ±thickened irregular tips; columellar structures absent. Epihymenium hyaline, with greyish granules. Asci 8-spored; tholus thick. Ascospores transversely septate to indistinctly submuriform, oblong, with ±rounded ends, hyaline, non-amyloid, 10–16 × 4–6 µm, with 4 (–5) × 1–2 locules; locules ±angular, initially lentiform, becoming irregular, often fused in a central axial groove, finally locules dividing and irregularly arranged; septa initially distinct and regular, becoming thicker and irregular; ascospore wall thin, thinly halonate; endospore thick. Pycnidia not seen.
CHEMISTRY: Thallus K–, C–, P–; no compounds detectable by TLC.
  A rare, corticolous endemic in rainforest in eastern Qld and north-eastern N.S.W.; found at altitudes up to 900 m.
