Thallus whitish or pale to dark brown, thin, smooth and continuous or sometimes thicker, cracked and areolate, to 2 cm wide, effuse or often delimited by a dark brown prothallus. Areolae irregularly shaped, contiguous, 0.3–0.8 mm wide; upper surface ±plane to weakly convex, isidiate. Isidia common, laminal, subglobose to cylindrical, not or sparingly branched, to 0.5 mm tall, with a darker brown apex. Apothecia rare, sessile, ±constricted at the base, round, 0.6–2.0 mm wide; disc pale to dark reddish brown, orange-brown or dark brown, ±plane or weakly convex, glossy, usually darker than the margin; thalline exciple ±undulate, pale, whitish to brownish, prominent, sometimes slightly curved over the disc, sometimes radially striate. Proper exciple poorly delimited. Epihymenium 10–12 µm thick. Hymenium 35–60 µm thick, colourless to brownish. Hypothecium 50–90 µm thick, colourless. Paraphyses colourless; apical cells not swollen and without a brown cap. Ascospores narrowly ellipsoidal, 9–17 × 2–3 µm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Cortex K–, C–, KC–, P–, N–; medulla K–, C–, KC+ pink, P–, UV+ blue-white; containing alectoronic acid (major), dehydroalectoronic acid (minor or trace), ±β-alectoronic acid (trace). |

This very rare species occurs on bark and dead wood in northern N.T.; also in Papua New Guinea. | ||
